War For the Planet of the Apes Trailer Seems to Mirror Impending National and Global Conflict
I mean, I could be reading way too much into a movie trailer, but...
OK, maybe I’m reading way too much into a movie trailer, but it was kind of impossible for me to watch the new trailer for War For the Planet of the Apes without thinking about the current state of the world. Maybe the apes taking over at this point wouldn’t be such a bad idea…?
In the above trailer, we hear voiceovers from both Andy Serkis’ Caesar and Woody Harrelson’s Colonel, each of them talking about how they have no choice but to fight, because the other side has pushed them too far. According to Caesar, humans were offered peace and needed only to leave the apes be. According to the Colonel, humans have been paying for the mistake of creating these sentient apes, and must now get rid of them or risk losing the planet and their species.
While I could do without the cheesy dialogue (“This is our last stand. And if we lose…it will be…a planet of apes.” Seriously, who’s writing this garbage?), the film actually looks really interesting as a continuation of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, with Caesar confronting how best to defend his ape colony. And, of course, humans gonna human, killing things they don’t understand and punishing others for their own mistakes.
I’ve gotta say, it’s an interesting time for a film about two groups wrestling for dominance and the fate of the planet. What do you think? Will you be going to check out War For the Planet of the Apes when it comes out this summer?
