Warner Bros. Is Trying to Reboot Gremlins. Yes, Really.
Oh Hollywood
It was only a matter of time. Vulture is reporting that Warner Bros. is trying their damnedest to get the reboot rights for ’80s classic Gremlins, because if there’s anything Hollywood’s been crying out for it’s a Gremlins remake, clearly.
Vulture’s sources say that Warner Bros. has tried to purchase the rights from Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment several times before, but it never worked out because it would’ve been too expensive. However, the source also says that it just might happen this time.
Spielberg, please don’t let it. Demand a billion dollars for this thing. Make a stipulation of the agreement that a reanimated Klaus Kinski has to play Gizmo. Stop this madness. You’re our only hope!
Nothing’s been confirmed by Warner Bros. or Amblin, so this could all be false, but do you honestly think that a big studio wouldn’t try and remake Gremlins? As /Film points out, there’ve been some quality horror/comedy remakes out lately; this remake, if it happens, isn’t necessarily going to be bad. I don’t hate remakes and reboots on principle the way a lot of people seem to. The way I see it, if it’s a good movie, that’s good enough for me. But until/unless we get some news that a skilled writer/director team is tackling this thing, my reaction to it will be a sustained wince.
