Sometimes there are trailers that are mysterious, where elements of the plot remain elusive and up for debate. Then, there are trailers like this one for Weird City, that are jam-packed with so many elements that they require multiple rewatches. The official synopsis describes the show as:

“From the mind of Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders comes WEIRD CITY, a satirical anthology set in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird. In this dystopian setting of our show, the middle class has completely vanished dividing Weird City into two sections: Above the Line (The Haves), and Below the Line (The Have Nots). Presiding over the denizens of the city is the strange and mysterious Dr. Negari, who weaves all of our stories together. Each episode is a topic that pertains to present day life in America and the world: social media addiction, online dating, fitness obsession, etc.. WEIRD CITY captures the unease of modern urban living, in a bizarre and peculiar lens.”

The trailer gives us a quick glimpse of the world of Weird City, where we see the disparate living conditions of the Above the Line and the Below the Line citizens. We see The Maze Runner‘s Dylan O’Brien watch skeptically as a wealthy couple complain about eating truffles. The trailer hops between different storylines, introducing us to a dizzying cast of film and television favorites.

Gillian Jacobs (Community), Hannah Simone (New Girl), Malcolm Barrett (Timeless), and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) all play Above the Liners cruising through the rougher side of the city. Later, they experiment with a technology that mimicks human intimacy, a play on a goofy plot device from Demolition Man.

Upper class citizens like Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, O’Brien and Ed O’Neill experiment with a match-making service called “the one that’s the one!” Cera eats some weird looking worms and hulks out. Awkwafina and Yvette Nicole Brown have the power to instantly change their wardrobes. Sarah Gilbert and Laverne Cox seem to be moving into a sentient house. And LeVar Burton plays the mysterious Dr. Negari who acts as a throughline in all the stories. Oh, and Mark Hamill is in there too.

If this all sounds, well, weird, it’s thanks to the wildly creative minds of Jordan Peele and Charlie Sanders, who worked together on the beloved sketch comedy series Key and Peele. The series seems funny and off-the-wall, and we’re always excited to see what Jordan Peele comes up with.

No release date has been set for Weird City, but we’ll be keeping a close eye on this quirky anthology series. What did you think of the trailer?
