Before we dive in, though, I wanted to give you some basic information about the show and how I’ll be covering it. Welcome to Night Vale is a podcast, which means it’s done entirely in audio. It’s also available for free online. The loose premise is that we’re hearing a radio news show in an American desert town called Night Vale. It’s hosted by a mysterious man named Cecil.
Night Vale is the weirdest place you’ll ever hear about. It’s a town filled with unspeakable monsters, ghosts, angels, totalitarian governing bodies, and endless conspiracies. But the strangest thing of all is how mundane everyone in Night Vale thinks it all is. Sentient glowing clouds can join the PTA. An independent, moving hand can be someone’s beloved daughter. A literal five-headed dragon can run for mayor. In a way, it’s a show about how every-day the bizarre can be.
In my recaps I’ll be going over the events of each episode and talking about new characters and elements of the town as they come up. I’ll also end each recap with a conspiracy-tracker section. Night Vale has a lot of secrets; if you pay attention you can see them evolve. Be warned though! The Conspiracy-Tracker will also give hints of events to come, as well as theories about what everything means.
So, if you’re an old fan or a curious new-comer, welcome! I think you’ll enjoy your stay in this weird, terrifying, dangerous, and hilarious town.
