We’re Not Getting an Extended Cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens—Just Deleted Scenes

It's a DIY extended cut!

There was apparently a wealth of unused material in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which you probably noticed when you reached the end of the over 2-hour movie and still felt like you wanted more. (That could also be due to how much you loved every second of it, admittedly.) However, the home release will feature no Lucas-style, after-the-fact meddling—though it will have separate deleted scenes.

That’s according to director J.J. Abrams, who told Entertainment Weekly, “I don’t know what the longest cut was. Probably, if it were with credits, close to two hours and 50 minutes was the first cut.” With the theatrical cut clocking in at 2 hours and 16 minutes, that’s quite a bit of a discrepancy, but he also said in no uncertain terms—as previously indicated—that we’d have to view that extra material as bonus features and not part of an alternate cut.

Well, that is until the fans get their hands on it, probably.

As far as what is actually contained in the extra footage, we’ve already heard some pretty interesting details about things that were unfortunately cut from the final film. There’s also the material that made it into the trailer that was conspicuously absent in the theater, so even if it won’t be integrated into the film, there should be plenty to look forward to for fans who want to see everything.
