What Is ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew?’ Everything We Know So Far About the New Disney+ Series
Disney+ and Lucasfilm may seem like they already have a huge roster of Star Wars television series slated for us in the coming year, but they aren’t done yet! Along with Obi-Wan Kenobi (which debuted on May 27), they also have Andor (a prequel series for Rogue One starring Diego Luna) coming in August, season 3 of The Mandalorian coming in February of 2023, Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson which just started filming, and The Acolyte—the Leslye Headland-helmed show set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, but that’s not all!
As a part of the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase panel at Star Wars Celebration 2022 in Anaheim, they also announced a brand new series called Star Wars: Skeleton Crew! This new series is the same one announced by Jon Watts (director of Spider-Man: No Way Home) earlier this month. It will premiere sometime in 2023.
What is Skeleton Crew about?
Obviously, known details about Skeleton Crew are slim, because Disney and Lucasfilm like to keep things tightly under wraps, but Jon Watts and screenwriter Christopher Ford did reveal a few tantalizing nuggets of information. Skeleton Crew will center around a group of four kids (around 10 to 12 years old) who are from a “tiny little planet” that end up getting lost in the Star Wars galaxy. The show will focus on their tumultuous journey home. Ford described the show as “about kids, but not necessarily for kids.”
Watts has described the show as “a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the 80s.” Watts also said that Skeleton Crew will give us a “different perspective on the Star Wars universe.” This is intriguing because it means that the show will likely be pulling themes and arcs from classic films like The Goonies, E.T., and possibly even Gremlins or Back to the Future. It will take place after the events of Return of the Jedi, around the same time as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and well before The Force Awakens.
Who is in it?
So far, Disney+ is keeping that to themselves, with the exception of one very exciting cast member. It was announced at the Star Wars Celebration panel that the series will be joined by everyone’s favorite young pope, Jude Law! What his role will be (is he a droid? A Jedi? An Inquisitor?) is still cloaked in mystery, so stay tuned for more updates as Disney+ and Lucasfilm reveal more about this exciting new show.
