The Fate of ‘Our Flag Means Death’ Has Been Decided
After processing our feelings about the Our Flag Means Death season 2 finale, all we could think about is whether or not we’re getting another season with our beloved pirate crew.
The season 2 ending was both beautiful and heartbreaking. Our favorite pirate found family is forever changed, but that doesn’t mean we want it to end. Previously, the creators of Our Flag Means Death said they would like to end the show after three seasons. So will Max give everyone what they want?
Back when season 1 of the show ended, fans immediately wanted more. We took to social media and contacted Max directly to profess our love of the show. From March 2022, when the season 1 finale aired, until June 2022, Max remained silent about a second season. Finally, season 2 was announced on June 1, 2022. Those were a long few months. Fans and the crew of the show were ecstatic to hear the news.
Max would be foolish not to renew the series. As reported by Yahoo, the show’s ratings and fanbase contend with other flagship HBO / Max series like Succession and The Righteous Gemstones. That’s not too shabby for a queer rom-com about pirates.
Max cancels Our Flag Means Death
On January 9, Max officially canceled Our Flag Means Death. The press release reads, “While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories that creator David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby, Garrett Basch, Dan Halsted, Adam Stein, Antoine Douaihy and the entire superb cast and crew brought to life. We also thank the dedicated fans who embraced these stories and built a gorgeous, inclusive community surrounding the show.”
It’s devastating news for fans of the beloved pirate show. Creator David Jenkins posted his response on Instagram. He reflected on being allowed to start this wild journey in the first place and how sad it will be not to finalize the story. But Jenkins reiterated how the show brought people together and that will be the legacy of OFMD. “Our Flag Means Us. Loving one another, pulling off some pretty weird and beautiful shit, and talking it through … as a crew.”
