Now That the Limited Series Is Over, Will There Be a Second Season of ‘The Ones Who Live’?
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has come to an end, with fans reuniting with beloved characters Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). But is this the only time we’ll see them together again, or is this just the beginning?
The Ones Who Live is categorized as a mini-series limited to six episodes. Gurira and Lincoln haven’t indicated that they would continue this story. But television is littered with plenty of limited series that then delivered new seasons (looking at you, Big Little Lies).
There are other shows in The Walking Dead universe, specifically ones that focus on characters from the flagship series like Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). So could TOWL be leading to a reunion of sorts between all these characters? Or is The Ones Who Live a send-off for Rick and Michonne’s story?
The way they’re talking about it gives me hope
Andrew Lincoln reprising the role of Rick Grimes was a big deal. Having him lose his hand was also a big deal. All of that was made so much better by the show focusing on Rick and Michonne searching for each other to reunite their family. And that’s where I am a little confused about things. Lincoln and Gurira did an interview for AMC where they recapped their love story in The Walking Dead: The Return. There, they kept talking about how this was the end of their story.
I don’t buy it. It’s one thing to say it once, but Lincoln and Gurira, in this special alone, say it multiple times, and that’s not even getting into other interviews. Maybe I’m just in denial, but I believe that we’re definitely going to see Rick and Michonne in the future.
The finale didn’t say no and it also didn’t point to a second season
**SPOILER ALERT: Spoilers for the entire season of The Ones Who Live lie ahead**
The last episode of the series, “The Last Time”, saw a nice final moment for our beloved characters. There didn’t seem to be any set-up for a future for The Ones Who Live. There are plenty of ways to do a second season and storylines they can pull in but, for the most part, the episode wraps up with Rick and Michonne back with their children and living happily ever after.
I am team “Daryl, Maggie, Carol, and company can all roll back up to Rick and Michonne’s world,” but that doesn’t mean a second season of The Ones Who Live. Maybe we’ll see them in something else or maybe we’ll just have to say goodbye to Rick and Michonne.
For now, we do not have any news about a second season or future TWD projects involving these two characters. But I do hope that, after watching The Ones Who Live, we see more of these characters. I need them!
