WWE’s $10 Streaming Television Network Is Exactly What We Want from Other Networks, Minus the Wrestling
Unless they want to put some robots or aliens in the ring. We'd probably watch that.
A lot of people are probably going to want to (pretend to) punch me in the face for saying this, but professional wrestling—well, the WWE kind, anyway—is really silly. That’s why we’re incredibly surprised to find ourselves so excited about WWE’s streaming television network, because it’s exactly what we’d like to see for TV’s future.
We wouldn’t have expected to see the end of TV networks as we know them start with WWE, but they’ve certainly got enough content and a wide enough fan base to pull it off, so hopefully other networks will follow, and TV will finally become absorbed by the unstoppable power of the Internet like everything else.
For a low $9.99 price, fans will have 24/7 streaming access to all WWE pay-per-view events (live and on-demand) as well as uncut and uncensored versions of past events, so they can watch really huge guys pretend to beat each other up to their hearts’ content.
Like I said, the really exciting thing about this is that its (hopefully) massive success could finally draw networks like HBO and Showtime to do the same thing, and we could all enjoy more of their content for less money. Maybe then Game of Thrones could finally stop being the most pirated show on television. We’d gladly pay you $9.99 every month, HBO. Help us help you.
