As we approach the release of the final Wolverine movie, Logan, the flurry (or would that be barrage) of reports coming from the production will amp up. Case in point: X-23. According to the @wponx Instagram, which has been slowly revealing bits and pieces of the movie all done up in the ever-popular Inkwell filter, the little girl featured in the billboard and trailer has been confirmed to be “Laura.” If you know anything about X-23 (or if you read Maddy’s wonderful X-23 primer), you’d know that her actual name is Laura Kinney.

Rumors began to swirl regarding the presence of Laura/X-23 when the first Logan billboard appeared and was subsequently tweeted by Hugh Jackman. The image depicted showed a small child’s hand holding Logan’s much larger, decidedly aged hand (with claws out, of course). Reports began pouring out from inside sources saying that the hand belonged to a little girl whose backstory echoes that of X-23 from the books. Finally, a trailer came out just a few days ago showing not only Professor X and Wolverine in action, but also the little girl. Once again, rumors reached a fever pitch as her powers were also similar to that of X-23’s.

Many–most of us included–are hoping that this movie marks something of a changing of the guard. We’ve long since known that Jackman’s last Wolverine movie would be Logan, leaving an open question to who may take up the mantle, provided that interest carries through past this movie. As in the comics, X-23 takes up that mantle, and we’re certainly hoping that she gets the opportunity to do so here as well. It may not happen right away, as the comics took some time with this as well, but introducing Laura here in Logan certainly sets the stage for a really rad Wolverine future.
