Ready Your Bedazzlers, Mutants, ‘Cause X-Men: Apocalypse Will Be an ‘80s Period Film

Bryan Singer had some other things to say to Total Filim about X-Men: Apocalypse, his follow-up to Days of Future Past, but nothing was so important as his admission that it’ll take place in the ‘80s. Neon scrunchies for everyone!
“We’re going to deal with the notion of ancient mutants – the fact they were born and existed thousads of years ago,” says Singer. “But it’ll be a contemporary movie – well, it’ll take place in the ‘80s… The ‘80s is a period now – it’s hard for me to believe that!”
So instead of McAvoy!Professor X saying “groovy,” will he be upgraded to “radical” and “tubular”? Will Wolverine et. al change out of disco duds and into puffy vests and acid-washed denim? Will “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” be on the soundtrack? Will Kitty Pryde have feathered hair?
These are important questions.
The notion of “ancient mutants” fits in well with the Apocalypse from X-canon, seeing as he’s a 5,000 year old immortal mutant. For those who worry that previous X-films have maybe been a bit too subtle and indie-ish, Singer notes that “Apocalypse will have more of the mass destruction that X-Men films, to date, have not relied upon. There’s definitely now a character and a story that allow room for that kind of spectacle… I don’t want to get too specific, but we’ll introduce familiar characters in a younger time. That’ll be fun to show the audience. I call these movies in-between-quels. It’s a mind-fuck sometimes in terms of where things fall in the timeline!”
That last sentence could basically serve as a motto for the franchise, couldn’t it?
With Days of Future Past not even out yet, it’s far too early to say for sure that Apocalypse will either relieve or contribute to the giant ball of timeline-related WTFery that X-Men has become. But I only care about one thing: First Class is set in the ’60s. Days of Future Past in the ’70s. Now, with Apocalypse, we have the ’80s. You know what comes next.
