Zachary Quinto Is Just Like Us and Also Hopes For a Star Trek 4

If Mr. Spock wants it, we should get it.

It’s been a bit of a rough several months for fans of the Star Trek Kelvin ‘verse films. Last August, stars Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth walked away from the negotiating table after they were promised less than what they were contracted for, prior to Star Trek Beyond underperforming at the box office. While stars like Karl Urban and John Cho voiced hope for a fourth film, the project has been shelved at Paramount for the time being.

Now, Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the new films, has voiced his support for eventually returning to the franchise. At the Teen Choice Awardss, he was asked about the project and said, “I mean, it’s been a broad conversation that we’ve been having for a while in terms of what’s the future of the franchise. It’s in process so I don’t know exactly what to say other than there’s no plans for a movie happening at this moment … I would love to. I feel like it’s been an anchor of my creative life for the last over ten years now so if I can go back to it, I’ll always be happy to. I love my Star Trek family so we’ll see how it goes.”

It’s a diplomatic way to say that yeah, things have been stalled and will probably be stalled for a while, but that Quinto would like to wear those ears once again. As someone who got into Trek via the Kelvin films, the fondness the cast has for the project as a whole makes me feel those warm fan fuzzies.

Pine himself has said that he’d love to be involved, though he might have been playing diplomatic to make sure that Paramount came back to the negotiating table.

At this point in time, as I’ve said before, Paramount might need to woman up and pay Pine what he’s owed. Pine has become a legitimate A-lister since 2009’s Star Trek debuted, and it is not his fault that Beyond underperformed at the box office; a weak marketing campaign and the fan reaction to Into Darkness might have sealed that deal. While movie star salaries are ridiculous, Pine was still contracted for a certain amount, and it’s up to Paramount to uphold their end of the deal.

Every single one of the cast members who’ve been interviewed about the future of Star Trek has wanted to return, and with Discovery and other CBS shows lighting up television, the IP hasn’t been this hot in a while. However, the ship has sailed for a 2019 or early 2020 release, and director SJ Clarkson has moved onto a new project. Paramount now has to play the waiting game, and risk having their cast sign on to other projects.

The good news is, the cast wants to return. The bad news is that Paramount seems content to shelve one of their biggest franchises for the time being. Even with the Quentin Tarantino Trek still in development, we deserve another Kelvin film before Tarantino gets his hands on the franchise. So, for the love of all that is good and Trek-y, Paramount needs to redevelop the project and come back to the table ready to pay their stars what they are worth.
