Not Even Zendaya Can Make the Original Spider-Man Theme Song Lyrics Sound Like Poetry

Recommended Videos

With the release of Spider-man: Homecoming just around the corner, Vanity Fair brought in Zendaya (aka The Reason I Want to See This Movie) to do a dramatic reading of the original 1960s theme song. You know, the one with lyrics like “Is he strong? Listen bud, he’s got radioactive blood.” It takes a lot of talent to make those words sound as dramatic as Zendaya manages to do.

The video also makes me realize that for the hundreds of times I’m sure I’ve heard this song in my life, I clearly wasn’t paying close attention. I’m not sure if I’ve ever noticed lyrics like “Wealth and fame, he’s ignored. Action is his reward.”

All in all, Zendaya makes these lyrics sound infinitely deeper than they have any right to. I now find myself unable to shake this wish that she would give the same treatment to the Squirrel Girl theme. Can you imagine? I’m imagining. And loving it.

In the dramatic styling of Zendaya: my favorite Squirrel Girl lyric.

“Finds some nuts.

Eats some nuts.

Kicks bad guys’ evil butts.”

Talk about poetry.
