The nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards have been announced. And yes, Hamilton is nominated for pretty much every category in which it can be nominated. However, this year is an interesting year for diversity on Broadway in general, as many of the other nominees show!

Hamilton, of course, was nominated for Best Musical alongside Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s musical Bright Star, School of Rock—The Musical, Savion Glover’s return to Broadway with Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed, and Sara Bareilles’ first musical, Waitress, which is based on the 2007 indie film of the same name.

So, in additional to the diversely created and cast Hamilton, we also have Shuffle Along, which features a mostly-black cast and was directed (George C. Wolfe) and choreographed (Glover) by black men. And then we have Waitress, which has an all-female creative team (music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, book by Jessie Nelson, choreography by Lorin Latarro, and direction by Diane Paulus).

On the play side, we have Eclipsed, which we’ve written about here before, starring a cast of African actresses including The Force Awakens‘ Lupita Nyong’o in a play written by The Walking Dead‘s Danai Gurira. Its director, Lisl Tommy is the only woman nominated for directing this year.
