Catching Fire Will Feature Less Shaky Cam, More Love Triangle

Yay on the first, not so yay on the second.

Director Francis Lawrence, who stepped into Catching Fire‘s director’s chair after Hunger Games director Gary Ross dropped out, had some things to New York Magazine about what we can expect from the film. First:

“No shaky cam. I think a lot of people will be happy to hear that.”

Whew. I don’t hate shaky cam in theory. It can work, but it just didn’t with The Hunger Games. I get the thematic relevance of it; the Games themselves are a reality show, so it’s fitting to film those scenes handheld. But the Games scenes featured a lot of running around, not to mention how the climax had two blonde dudes with similar builds fighting each other in the dark. Adding rapid camera movement into the mix made the cinematography far more jarring than it needed to be.

I’m less pleased by Lawrence’s other statement:

“I felt the love story in general was, um, a bit buried in the first one. I wanted to bring the love story to the surface. And when I say love story, I mean the triangle.”

Grooooan.

The love triangle was, for me, one part of The Hunger Games that I never really got into. Team Peeta? Team Gale? I’m Team Sanity and a Healthy Sense of Self-Worth. That’s my Katniss OTP. No disrespect to people who do like the love triangle aspect, of course—we can’t all like the same things. But I really hope that subplot isn’t brought to the surface so much that it overshadows Katniss’ personal growth as a leader of the people. I have faith that it won’t since the trailers we’ve seen so far have focused on revolution, not romance. But maybe they’re just exceptionally well-done trailers.

All I can say is: May the odds be ever in our favor.
