Restaurant chain Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen innocently tried to crowdsource the name of its new green apple-flavored Mountain Drew concoction, letting people submit and vote for names online. Well, 4chan decided to take them up on their offer to “Dub the Dew,” and results were highly educational. I didn’t know there were so many ways to describe a carbonated beverage tasting faintly of green apple, and apparently, neither did Mountain Dew.
The Dub the Dew site is down, but here’s a working mirror. Before the site was taken down, it was hacked. A Tumblr user described what happened after he clicked on the link on Reddit:
After clicking the link the user was directed to the mountain dew website and a pop up box that said “le 9gga are leggion” appeared… I kind of panicked, thinking it was a website with a virus or something. However, after clicking “ok” an embedded Youtube video of Rick Astley singing “Never Gonna Give You Up” starts playing. There was also a marquee at the top of the page that says “Mtn Dew salutes the Israeli Mossad for demolishing 3 towers on 9/11!”
Amusingly, no one actually knows who started all this. Reddit says it’s 4chan. 4chan says it’s Reddit. However, this is HyperVocal‘s screencap of the original thread on 4chan, so it was probably 4chan.
No matter what the beverage is called in the end, it will henceforth remain “Diabeetus,” or anything people want to call it, really. “Fapple.” “Gushing Granny.” Might not want to Google that. Also on the leaderboard is a certain honest pony named Applejack, the considerable might of the bronies behind her. It’s one of the least obscene suggestions, so maybe. Soon.
