Cautiously Optimistic

Back in September it was made official that J.J. Abrams won’t be directing the third Star Trek reboot, since he’ll be way too busy with that other Star film. Directors Rupert Wyatt and Jon M. Chu have been rumored as the inheritors of the Captain’s chair, and now someone else joins them: Attack the Block‘s Joe Cornish.

Yes, please.

According to Deadline Cornish is on top of Paramount’s list of who they want to direct, though there’s no mention of him being in talks. As with all rumors that trace back to anonymous sources, take this with a game of salt. But Cornish certainly wouldn’t be a surprising choice, as /Film notes that there’ve been “rumblings” for a while now that he might direct.

In addition to directing the excellent Attack the Block (my number one pick for indie sci-fi/fantasy you need to watch), Cornish co-wrote both The Adventures of Tintin and Ant-Man. If he does snag Star Trek 3 it’ll be his first big-budget project as a director.

I’m speaking now to my fellow nerds who were disappointed by Star Trek Into Darkness but love Attack the Block (hands up, rubber ducks!): Let’s not get too excited. Star Trek 3 is still being written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. And Abrams is still producing, though I don’t particularly mind that.

I feel kind of bad for whoever ends up inheriting the franchise, to be honest. Here’s hoping that Cornish’s influence (should he get the job) can turn the great ship Star Trek around.
