Circle March 14, 2014 on your calendars, ’cause that’s when Veronica Mars is coming back into our lives. (But verrrry, verrrry slowly… because of how Kristen Bell loves sloths. Oh, like I’m not going to make a sloth reference any time there’s the slightest connection. You clearly don’t know me very well.)
Ahem. Rob Thomas also had some things to say about the release plan and the film itself. Check it out behind the jump.
According to Thomas the original plan was to release the film in only a handful of cities before a major push on VOD and digital release platforms, which is great for Veronica Mars nerds in Los Angeles and New York, but not so great for everyone else. Luckily for the everyone else Warner Bros. is opting instead for a wider, more open-ended release. The more people go, the longer it’ll stay in theaters. “We’re not going to dribble it out there,” Thomas explained.
The film takes place 10 years after the show ended, with Veronica, now a high-powered lawyer, coming back to Neptune around the time of her high school reunion. That setting means a whole lot of show alumni are going to be in the movie, which made for some difficulties. Says Thomas:
“There are smart ways to do a movie of this size — and we chose none of them. We are a low budget movie with big set pieces and 60 speaking roles. A murder mystery in a house would have been more cost effective. But I think we have managed to pull it off.”
Welp, on March 14, 2014, we’ll see. Entertainment Weekly has a clip, but it’s not embeddable because that’s how they roll. Head over there for a glimpse of Veronica, Mac, Wallace, and a blonde popular girl type whom I don’t know because I never actually watched Veronica Mars. Whoops.
