Agents of SHIELD has a pretty significant cast of characters who were labeled “recurring” when they were first announced, though since we’re only nine episodes into a twenty-two episode season, almost nobody has actually gotten to recur yet, except villains.
Aside from the core cast, I’m pretty sure Ruth Negga and Shannon Lucio, both playing Centipede employees, are so far the only characters to appear in more than one episode. David Conrad, who played Ian Quinn in “The Asset” and Ron Glass were also announced as having recurring roles in the series, though they haven’t gotten a second appearance. So part of me wonders about this announcement that we’ll get two more recurring characters in episode fourteen. Perhaps we aren’t getting new characters, but the return of some old ones?
According to TVLine:
Episode 14 will introduce two recurring characters: an African-American agent who specializes in combat/weapons, and a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent/munitions expert who has past ties to both Coulson and Ward.
An African-American agent specializing in combat and weapons could easily be another appearance of Akela Amador, Coulson’s protege who was rescued from a unknown villain forcing her to play jewel thief, and I would not complain. The show could really use some more frequently recurring characters of color, whether its Akela, Ron Glass’ Dr. Streiten, or, as we’ll see this coming week, J. August Richards‘ Mike Peterson. The POC one-time guest star role has nearly become a fully fledged trend on the show.
