While doing a press junket for the new Robocop movie, Michael Keaton confirmed he’s been talking with Tim Burton about Beetlejuice 2, which is the closest thing to official confirmation that it’s in the works that we’ve gotten.  We’ve talked about the rumors swirling around this sequel before but have gotten no real source to confirm Burton’s involvement up to this point. The confirmed involvement of both Keaton and Burton, if the movie happens, certainly adds to hopes for a good Beetlejuice 2, as who knows what it would be like without either of them.

A couple months ago, our own Rebecca Pahle had this to say about the rumors swirling around the possibility of Beetlejuice 2:

The Wrap then “confirmed” that he’s in talks for Beetlejuice 2. I put confirmed in quotation marks because the source is “multiple individuals familiar with the project.” Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t think something’s confirmed unless someone involved with the project (so, in this case, Burton or a someone from Warner Bros.) actually goes on record as saying it’s true.

“Confirmed.” I do not think it means what you think it means.

Well, good news, because we’re much closer to a confirmation now. Rolling Stone had this quote from Keaton:

I’ve emailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff until relatively recently. I always said that [Beetlejuice] is the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and emailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.

It seems like, while nothing is set in stone yet, both Burton and Keaton are ramping up their level of seriousness regarding this project. And since Keaton won’t do it without Burton involved, I suppose we’re looking at a really good Beetljuice 2 or a really bad one. Winona Ryder has also mentioned in November that she might be doing a sequel to Beetlejuice, saying her character of Lydia “was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.”

So, basically, while we’re still a ways from official confirmation of Burton’s involvement, it does seem like all the key players are circling the project and talking about it pretty seriously. The fact that Keaton would say what he said definitely points to this being well on the way to reality. Fingers crossed!
