Sounds Like J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Is Getting A Movie Trilogy

We knew that the Harry Potter spinoff book was getting a movie, but three? Three of them? Break out the butterbeer!

There’s no official announcement yet, but judging by a recent article in the New York Times, this sounds like it’s in the works. This weekend, the Times published a profile of Warner Bros. C.E.O. Kevin Tsujihara, who originally coaxed J.K. Rowling into writing the Fantastic Beasts screenplay. Tucked in among details about his career history was an interesting tidbit about the movie — or, as it turns out, movies.

From the NYT:

…his deft touch became clear to Hollywood’s creative community last September. That is when Warner announced that Ms. Rowling had agreed to adapt for the big screen her “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a 2001 book billed as one of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbooks. Three megamovies are planned. The main character will be a “magizoologist” named Newt Scamander.

For those needing a brush-up on their wizard lore, Scamander is the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts. According to the Times, the movies will be set in New York, seventy years before a little boy who lives in a cupboard takes a fateful trip to the zoo. While obviously existing in the same universe as Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts will not be a prequel.

I’m sometimes a little wary of splitting single books into multiple films, but considering how much I wanted to take part in Hagrid’s magical creature lessons — yes. Yes, I am all for this.
