Well, it’s not quite “over my dead body,” but it’s pretty close.

You may have heard that there’s gonna be a plug for X-Men: Days of Future Past in the most unlikeliest of places: smack in the middle of the credits for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. You may have gotten real excited about whether this means that a crossover between the two largest non-Marvel-Entertainment Marvel film franchises is on its way from some halcyon future. Well, hold your horses, everybody, because the reason for the spot has more to do with contract negotiations.

As part of his contract with Fox Searchlight (sibling to 20th Century Fox, home of the X-Men franchise), TASM 2 director Marc Webb still owes them a movie before his non-compete clause is up. So, in order to work it out so Webb could make The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, Sony had to agree to plug a Fox movie. Fox chose X-Men: Days of Future Past. And just so nobody gets any ideas, TASM 2 producer Avi Arad has said in no uncertain terms that a Spider-Man and the X-Men film is not in the cards.

There’s so much to tell about Spider-Man. There’s so much to tell about the Sinister Six. The relationship between Spider-Man and Venom will bring a whole other world in. [Spider-Man is] unique and we revere that… We’d rather work really hard to have the right ideas than — you know in the toy business we used to make toys glow in the dark when they weren’t selling it well and it gave at least another Christmas. We don’t need it yet… I think it will take a moment in which we’ve run out of ideas.

So, no Peter and Piotr meet cute in cinema future, but speaking of X-Men, Channing Tatum says he’s taken a major step on his way to a life-long dream: he’s had a sit down meeting with Lauren Shuler Donner about playing the role of Gambit in an upcoming adaptation, telling one reporter that he’s already working on his accent. Additionally, it seems that stories of Anna Paquin‘s demise from X-Men: Days of Future Past have been only slightly exaggerated. While it was previously thought that Rogue had been cut from the film entirely, she appears to now be back in, at least for a little bit. And that’s good news, sugar.
