Lara Croft Way: The Internet Names a Street

Someday soon, everyone is finally going to realize that if you put a poll on the internet, it is going to be biased towards the culture of the internet.  Until then, we can all rejoice in things like this.

Back in December, the city of Derby in central England ran an online poll to decide the name of a new road.  Among the eight Derby-related choices was Lara Croft Way, honoring the eternal hero of Tomb Raider.  I think we can all guess what happened next:   

Derby, in case you were wondering, was the location of Core Design, the company that created Lara, which is now no longer in business.

BBC:

Councillor Lucy Care, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: “The vote really captured the imagination of people from across the world and, despite my lack of gaming knowledge, I accept that a majority of 89% for Lara Croft is too overwhelming to ignore.

Here’s to the bewilderment of people not tuned in to online culture!  May it reign as long as Longcat!
