Six years ago this month, YouTube was born, and it’s remarkable to consider how far the online video platform has come in the time since. In a blog post commemorating its birthday, the YouTube team lets drop some truly eye-popping stats: Every minute, YouTube users upload 48 hours of video, twice as much as they were uploading at this time last year. Even more remarkably, YouTube now sees 3 billion video views per day, a 50% increase over last year.

As Peter Kafka notes, in December of 2005, when the mainstream media started talking about YouTube in connection with the proto-viral “Lazy Sunday” video, it saw 2.5 million video views a day. Three orders of magnitude in six years is not bad at all.
