Downton Abbey doesn’t really need to get any better than it is now, but it’s going to anyway. Paul Giamatti is joining the PBS Masterpiece masterpiece for the finale of its fourth season. He’s unfortunately apparently only appearing in that one episode, but hopefully we can expect him to return for season five. So who is he playing?
The John Adams star will be playing a character named Harold Levinson who is Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) brother. TVLine is reporting that Levinson is a “maverick” and a “playboy.” Those aren’t generally words that leap to mind when one thinks of Paul Giamatti, but the man has range and I’m sure he can play a playboy or mimic a maverick with the best of them.
The show’s executive producer Gareth Neame called the character “free-spirited” and said that he, along with his mother played by Shirley MacLaine will “upset the Grantham’s apple cart.” I’m not sure exactly what that means, but I don’t hate the idea of Giamatti shaking up somebody’s apple cart.
