Who he is:
Astronaut. Author. International Space Station (ISS) Commander. YouTube sensation. Fantastic human being. The question is, what is Commander Hadfield not? His new book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth, tells amazing stories about Hadfield’s experiences as an astronaut and inspires you to believe in the impossible. Chris Hadfield is one of the most seasoned and accomplished astronauts in the world. The top graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School in 1988 and U.S. Navy test pilot of the year in 1991, Hadfield was selected by the Canadian Space Agency to be an astronaut in 1992. He was CAPCOM for 25 Shuttle launches and served as Director of NASA Operations in Star City, Russia, from 2001–2003, Chief of Robotics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2003–2006, and Chief of International Space Station Operations from 2006–2008. Hadfield most recently served as Commander of the International Space Station where, while conducting a record-setting number of scientific experiments and overseeing an emergency spacewalk, he gained worldwide acclaim for his breathtaking photographs and educational videos about life in space. His music video, a zero-gravity version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” received over 10 million views in its first three days online.
Why you should follow:
Commander Hadfield is the astronaut we all wish we could be best friends with. Despite being an all around amazing human being, he’s also very down to earth (sorry, that was pretty bad) and a very witty guy. He’s also had some really great promotional videos for his book, so there’s no doubt that following him will bring endless joy into your life.
If all of that isn’t enough, it’s really great to hear what’s going on in space these days directly from an astronaut. Also, he talked about Gravity and space underwear on Conan, which was great. Plus, maybe if you follow him, he’ll be your best friend. We can’t guarantee that, but it’s worth a shot.

Astronaut sarcasm is hilarious, especially since he’s griping about things he has to do to make sure he’s healthy after, you know, flying around the whole entire planet a bunch in space.
