Plus: Paul McGann says a Doctor Who video that set the ‘net abuzzing when it was released before the 50th Anniversary special will be getting a sequel. This news is not as good as it could be.
No, it’s not The Night of the Doctor—aka “Paul McGann is back as the Doctor, holy crap, HOLY CRAP!”—that we’ll be seeing more of. According to The Mirror McGann told students at the Cambridge Union Society that The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, a short about Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy, and Colin Baker running around trying to get cast in the 50th anniversary special, will be getting the regeneration treatment. It’s not McGann being attractive all over the place (though he did have a cameo), but it has McCoy being a delightful teddy bear of a man, so really, I can’t complain.
McGann also spoke out about whom he’d like to see as a female Doctor, a subject he’s not been shy of addressing in the past. Via The Mirror, he “…claimed that Doctor Who producers ‘missed a trick’ by casting Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, instead of a first female lead. He named Tilda Swinton and Diana Quick as women he could see in the role.”
Speaking of Capaldi, upcoming Doctor Who villain Keeley Hawes swears that he’ll be awesome, even if Moffat’s not (OK, that last part’s me, not her): “He’s just brilliant. Peter Capaldi is just fabulous – I think everyone’s going to love him.”
One step ahead, Keeley. I already love him. I mean:
And finally, in the realm of that other Moffat show: Louise Brealey (Molly Hooper) will be filling some of that Sherlock hiatus time with a role in Ripper Street, where she’ll go from playing a pathologist to Dr. Amelia Frayn, “one of the first women doctors,” she explains. “I’m really excited because I did history at university and I love a bit of research. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson blazed the trail in the 1870s and in the intervening decade or so a few extremely intrepid and unusual women started learning to be doctors themselves.”
When Ripper Street returns it’ll be exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video, Amazon having rescued the show after the BBC gave it the axe. *coughTheHournextcough*
