You read that correctly. AMC is going to make a chat show called The Talking Dead. No, this morning you did not suddenly wake up in a universe where that pun you tossed off at the end of a Walking Dead drinking game (drink for every zombie kill, just for starters) got made into a real television show.
The Talking Dead is going to run as a half hour live show airing after new episode of The Walking Dead and it’s first late night encore, and Chris Hardwick, of Nerdist fame will be hosting, so… that actually sounds pretty fun for Walking Dead fans. The purpose of the show is to do that most ultimate of nerdy things: gleefully dissect the latest episode of a favorite show.
Hardwick moderated the Walking Dead panel at Comic Con, and even this listener, who has never seen the show or read the comics, was thoroughly entertained by his MCing. According to /Film, he not only sees the show as a chance to get paid to do something he would be doing anyway: “dissecting the moves of Rick Grimes and the remaining survivors after every episode,” but as a public service.
[I]t will better inform viewers on making intelligent decisions when faced with the zombie apocalypse, which will probably happen sooner or later.
/Film notes that it’s unusual to have a recap program for a scripted drama, but on the contrary, there are plenty of nerds out there who rush to the internet after their favorite shows air to get their discussion fix on. It seems unusually perceptive of AMC, as a broadcasting company, to try and exploit that urge to keep eyeballs on their channel.
Just make sure to keep the potted plants in your set dressing away from the zombies, Chris. YES, THAT WAS A PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES JOKE.
