Marvel Studios has a bunch of movies planned for the next couple of years, but for the most part, they’re sequels to existing franchises — Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, plus The Avengers, which also includes all of the above. But the studio is looking to find its next new franchise, and one possibility being floated by Kevin Feige is one of their lesser known titles, The Inhumans. Are we ready for another Marvel ensemble?
Back in March, the prospect of a movie being made out of The Inhumans was raised, saying that Marvel was looking for scripts to take on the project. Feige confirmed this in Entertainment Weekly recently (in that big Avengers issue that hit stands this weekend) that they were indeed looking into The Inhumans, and one scribe who has taken them on is Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Adventures of Tintin), who Feige says wrote “an excellent draft,” but no decisions have been made yet.
The Inhumans made their first appearance in a 1965 issue of Fantastic Four. Their background entails an alien race called the Kree, who came to Earth to experiment on primitive humans to not only subvert their own evolutionary stagnation, but to develop a new race to fight against their enemy, the Skrulls. This human-hybrid species developed superpowers and advanced technology, and started their own race on Earth, eventually forming a rigid caste system that forbade the Inhumans to form relationships with other races. (Not-a-spoiler: That happened anyway, more than once.) The main characters are members of a royal family among the Inhumans, Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and Lockjaw (a dog), all led by the king, Black Bolt. They often appeared in the comics fighting mutual foes alongside the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, and that’s one thing that’s making them very attractive to Marvel Studios as a possible new franchise.
But before you start thinking about a possible post-credits introduction when The Avengers comes out next year, keep in mind that this is most likely not going to begin any kind of production until after that comes out. However, you might remember that Marvel has two release dates blocked off in 2013 and 2014 for two films that have yet to be named. One of them might be the delayed The Runaways, which was said to start filming in 2012, but it hasn’t been mentioned in a while, so it’s all purely speculation right now.
Kevin Feige actually name dropping some characters is relatively definitive, considering the rumors about everyone from Ant-Man to Doctor Strange, and we will say that the thought of Edgar Wright writing a Marvel movie is pretty awesome, though. But that’s about the only thing we know for sure.
