With the huge success of Walt Disney’s re-release of The Lion King in 3D, the company has decided to go for gold by converting several other classics. Beauty and the Beast, Pixar’s Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. and The Little Mermaid will be back in theaters in 3D in the next two years. Just imagine that giant splash coming towards you!
You may not be a 3D fan or even more specifically, you may not be a 3D re-release fan, but Disney’s decision is a wise one financially. Lion King as made almost $80 million domestically so far in its re-release and was number one at the box office two weeks in a row. It’s now the fourth highest grossing animated film of all time with a domestic gross of $408,325,509 since it’s original release in back in 1994. And with its blu-ray release today they stand to make even more than Uncle Scrooge’s money bin can safely hold.
Here’s the dates for the next four re-releases from the studio:
- Beauty and the Beast -January 13, 2012
- Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012
- Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013
- The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013
The Monsters, Inc. release will also be the perfect lead-in to its prequel, Monsters University, coming out June of 2013. Disney president Alan Bergman said in a press release, “Great characters and great stories are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both.” Treasure is right.
So, which one are you most excited for?
