To tide you over between now and tonight’s baby Batman premiere, here are some promotional pics from Gotham‘s upcoming third episode, “The Balloonman.” Coming Soon has an official synopsis for the October 6th installment:

Detectives Gordon and Bullock track down a vigilante who is killing corrupt Gotham citizens by attaching them to weather balloons. Meanwhile, Oswald Cobblepot returns to Gotham and gets a new job close to an influential figure in the underworld.

I’m equal parts excited and nervous to finally see Victoria Cartagena as Renee Montoya—it’s awesome that Gotham will feature one of the few POC associated with the Batman universe, but I just hope rumors that the show won’t ignore her sexuality (a leaked draft allegedly stated that Montoya once dated Barbara Kean) are accurate. On an unrelated note: I see you there, Gotham costume and prop department. If Penguin’s descent into villainy continues to be represented by increasingly ridiculous cardigans, I will forgive you James Gordon’s babyface.

In other Gotham cast news, Jada Pinkett Smith (seen playing “Fish Mooney” in the “Balloonman” pics) is slated to start work soon on an entirely different project. (It’s a safe assumption that Magic Mike XXL is a pretty big departure from Gotham, right? Unless…is Penguin’s sweater a tear-away?) Pinkett-Smith revealed recently on The Queen Latifah Show that she’ll be joining the cast of the Magic Mike sequel:

Yes, you know, Channing and Gregory and Warner Bros. really took a chance […] There was a character written for a male that they wanted to turn into a female.” Will she be dancing? No, she said, “not one of those [characters]! I can’t really reveal it yet, but I’m excited about it.

Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer, and Steven Soderbergh will all be returning for Magic Mike XXL, due out July 1st, 2015.
