After having 99% of her screentime unceremoniously chopped from X-Men: Days of Future Past, Anna Paquin’s Rogue will finally get to take part in some futureverse shenanigans when her scenes are included in a special “Rogue Cut” of the film, set to come out in 2015.
Says writer/producer Simon Kinberg of the cut footage:
“It’s a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie. We want to give (fans) the fullest picture of the film—behind the camera, and in front of it… Every movie has scenes that are cut out, but not every movie has scenes cut out with such a beloved character.”
The scene, which Kinberg earlier said would “end up on Blu-ray some way down the line“—but hey, better if you can get people to pony up for a different cut of the movie, right?—was borne of a desire to see older Professor X and Magneto have one last hurrah as a duo (“What would it be like to have Patrick and Ian on a road trip together?”). So they go rescue Rogue from “some dark scary place,” with the idea that she’ll absorb Kitty Pryde’s powers and take over projecting Wolvering into the past when Kitty starts to wear down. It was cut for practical reasons, namely that it didn’t “service the main story.” Says Kinberg:
“I thought it would increase the urgency and the stakes of the plot in the future, but it actually does the opposite, because it makes you feel like there is an answer out there. You think once Rogue gets here, we’ll have an unlimited amount of time. The ticking clock that we’d established with Kitty getting wounded and losing her powers… well, Rogue would show up and press stop on the clock. So for all of those narrative reasons, there was this ten-minute subplot that had to go.”
Everyone who really, really wishes they could’ve seen Rogue getting rescued like a damsel in distress will be able to do so “in the first half of 2015, most likely during the summer,” writes Variety. The “Rogue Cut” will also include deleted scenes with other characters. So… so that’s where all the Bishop stuff went, yeah? Please?
