We have several Marvel tidbits for you today, including THE SPADER talking about Ultron, his robot baddie whom part of Tumblr has discovered nascent sexual longings for everyone’s been talking about since the trailer hit. BOW BEFORE THE SPADER AND HIS (former) FLOPPY-HAIRED GLORY.
Speaking to Total Film, THE SPADER called his character “a very powerful, smart child.” SAY THAT TO ULTRON’S ANIMATRONIC EYEBROWS, JAMES. “In many ways he’s a child, this character, because he’s a brand new being who’s just come to be. And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge,” he explained. “Ultron takes abrupt turns in scenes. Red [THE SPADER’s Blacklist character] isn’t psychopathic, but Ultron is. Yes, he is psychopathic. He’s really batshit crazy!”
A batshit crazy immature robot Disney fan. Yeah, OK. I’m down for that.
Also on Disney’s slate is Big Hero 6, which directors Don Hall and Chris Williams told /Film will have its share of Disney and Marvel Easter Eggs. Specifically, fans should keep their eyes peeled during the scene that shows Fred’s room:
Williams: Well, I will say we generally have a lot of Easter eggs in this movie to the point that we had to really tell our artists to knock it off. Because, you know, everyone wants to place stuff. We grew up loving Marvel movies. We, of course, grew up loving animated movies. And now we have a potential to sort of place these things. But it got to the point where Don and I are feeling like this is getting to be too much, too distracting. So we stopped them and then actually pulled a couple things out.
Hall: Marvel was actually pretty cool and gave us like the, you know, the nod to put a few…
Williams: Very obscure.
Hall: I would say Z level characters in the movie. As little Easter eggs. And they’re in Fred’s room. So it might be a good place to look.
Williams also said that “a lot of references to Disney animated movies and Marvel movies” will be there. As is the Marvel way, there will be a post-credits scene as well.
Skipping over to 20th Century Fox, X-Men: Days of Future Past second unit director Brian Smrz confirmed to Newsarama that the Quicksilver who isn’t the one with the worse wig* will be returning for X-Men: Apocalypse. Smrz makes reference only to “another Quicksilver scene,” so it could just be a very small role like it was in Days of Future Past. Given how popular Evans Peters’ Quicksilver proved among audiences, though, I’d imagine they’d beef up his part. Smrz also said he’d “love to do a Quicksilver as a solo film” and that “we talked about Quicksilver before,” “we” meaning… the brass at Fox? Bryan Singer? Other sites have gone full “WE MIGHT BE GETTING A QUICKSILVER MOVIE1!!1!!!” with this, but I don’t think the fact that the second unit director on DoFP chatted about the possibility is really enough to get us there. Still, fingers crossed. I think Peters could use a break from the batshit weirdness.
*Ask Victoria and she’ll tell you that I can go on for a while about why Peters’ Quicksilver wig is better than Aaron Taylor Johnson’s, but the tl;dr is this—Peters’ wig is ridiculous, but his Quicksilver is a ridiculous asshole dressed in stupid ’90s mall kid clothes, so having a bedraggled chinchilla that looks like it suffered a bad dye job perched on his noggin totally fits. Ultron‘s Quicksilver, from what we’ve seen and heard so far, is more srs bsns, so the wig—while maybe technically better—is incongruous with its character in a way that makes the whole package less effective for me. I’ve thought about this.
