We have so much information about Peggy’s new series that it’s hard to keep my red lipstick from getting smudged in all the excitement.
Marvel has released a new series synopsis for the show, which is officially “Marvel’s Agent Carter“. Sure, they could have just summed the whole thing up with “Don’t mess with Peggy,” but they gave us this synopsis instead:
Years before Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team swore to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive, there was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), who pledged the same oath but lived in a different time when women weren’t recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts.
But no one should ever underestimate Peggy.
It’s 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field; putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America.
When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy.
If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.
The show will star Hayley Atwell as Carter, obviously, but also James D’Arcy, Chad Michael Murray (I know), Enver Gjokaj, and Shea Whigham as regulars. More than one lady full-timer would have been nice, but I guess not everything can be perfect.
Over at NYCC, I was lucky enough to be able to hit up the Agents of SHIELD panel, and despite the fact that Agent Carter had only been filming for four days at that point, Clark Gregg and Jeph Loeb presented the eager crowd with some first-look footage. They had actual agents of SHIELD roaming the aisles looking for recording devices, so I have no footage to show you, but I did take some serious notes. Very very mild spoilers for the pilot episode start NOW:
The footage from the pilot was directed by Louis D’Esposito, who also directed the original Peggy Carter one-shot. The clip opens with Peggy basically looking super bad-ass. She meets Howard Stark on a dock, and asks him where he’s headed. Stark has to pay some folks a visit overseas who have become a threat–but he needs some help back home. One of Stark’s more dangerous formulas has been stolen–he’s not sure if it works yet (“But let’s face it… I invented it, so it works,” says Stark). A very small amount of this formula could level a city block—or as Peggy says, “Boom.”
Peggy laments that she’s going to regret helping Stark, and he agrees, but says they need her help. Before speeding off in his boat, Stark tells Peggy, “I owe you one, pal,” which I think sets up their friendship very nicely. As Stark drives off, he says that Peggy’s never had trouble finding a man anyways—but she says the trouble is finding the right one.
Peggy walks back up to her car (ostensibly originally sent by Stark to pick Peggy up earlier that night), and warns her driver never to again approach a woman in a dark alley without introducing himself first. The driver (James D’Arcy) says he will, to avoid future concussions (go Peggy!); but should Peggy need anything, to call him before 9pm (because that’s when he and his wife go to bed). Peggy accuses him of being new to espionage, but that’s anything but the case – he introduces himself, of course, as Jarvis. Peggy says she’s got to get to work.
We then cut to a crazy fight scene in a kitchen, where Peggy kicks some dude’s ass straight out a window, and it’s as beautiful as you’d expect.
What do you think of all the Agent Carter deets? Are you excited for the show? Let us know in the comments!
