Despite the fact that DC Comics and Marvel are slowly, sloooowly geting better when it comes featuring different types of gender, racial, and body diversity in their books, the behind-the-scenes ratio of male to female comic creators leaves something to be desired. So it’s cool to see that in March, Marvel will be doing a special variant cover event to highlight their pool of female artists. But is it enough?

Firs off, the awesome the artist line-up for this event, which was first announced during New York Comic-Con this year, includes Katie Cook for Ant-Man #3;Ā Stephanie Hans forĀ Thor #6;Ā Jill Thompson forĀ Inhuman #13; Vanesa del Ray forĀ Black Widow #16;Ā Sarah Pichelli forĀ Ms Marvel #13;Ā Stacey Lee forĀ Uncanny X-Men #33; Faith Erin Hicks for X-Men #39;Ā Erica Henderson for #Guardians of the Galaxy #25;Ā Afua Richardson forĀ All-New Hawkeye #1; Ming Doyle forĀ Amazing Spider-Man #16; Janet Lee for Rocket Raccoon #9; Colleen Doran forĀ S.H.I.E.L.D. #4;Ā and yet to be announced artists forĀ Deadpool #43, Captain Marvel #13, Uncanny Avengers #3, New Avengers #31, Avengers #42, All-New Captain America #5, Superior Iron Man #6,Ā and The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #3.

Of course, as variants, all of these gigs are temporary and don’t have anything do with what goes on beyondĀ the covers; and, even though Marvel’s clearlyĀ been working to include more female creators, even with this special event they’re still lagging behind the amount of women who worked on DC Comics’ March solicits.Ā Still, I’d hate to look a gift variant in the mouth for too longā€”if the above covers are any indication, March is going to be a really cool month for some amazing art by talented ladies. That’s worth celebrating, right?
