J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek was a great time for all concerned, a shiny sci-fi action flick that mucked around with time travel and parallel universes to give an oddly… canonical complete reboot of decades of continuity. But as much as we love it, we’ve still gotta say that thing. You know, that thing that we say all the time: it suuure only had one lady in it.
So it’s good to know that J.J. Abrams has been looking into that, even venturing into the territory of making new lady characters from scratch, by hiring actress Alice Eve for an as-yet-unannounced role in Star Trek 2.
Eve joins Benicio del Toro as Abrams’ first choices to play the film’s new characters. It’s well understood that del Toro will be playing the villain of the movie, but Eve’s role could be practically anything. Translation: she’ll probably be a love interest for Kirk or a villain, or both.
It’ll be Eve’s second foray into the sequel of a sci-fi franchise: she’s also wrapped a role in Men in Black III as a younger version of Emma Thompson. According to Variety, Abrams has only one major role left to cast. Filming starts early next year.
