Gal Gadot Responds To Criticisms That Her Body Isn’t Right For Wonder Woman

This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

When you sign to be the first Wonder Woman to ever hit the big screen, you’re going to be on the receiving end of oceans of criticism. Some of that criticism, of course, is OK and necessary, and even good in the big picture. Some of it, however, is going to be a steaming pile o’ bullshit laser-focused around entirely the wrong things.

For a glimpse into something that leans towards the latter, we’ve got the small hullaballoo around Batman v Superman‘s Wonder Woman Gal Gadot’s body. Here she is responding to those criticisms that her body’s not right for the part. From an interview with Robot Underdog:

They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small [Laughs]… After they asked me here, In Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny – they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick – I can take anything. It’s just empty talk. I understand that part of what I’m doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire.

When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amuses me. The true amazons had one boob so it wouldn’t bother them in their archery. So it’s not going to be like real amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can’t.

Now, I would be first in line for a non-skinny Wonder Woman, because there’s obviously a massive imbalance in Hollywood when it comes to size inclusion. That’s something that needs to be talked about and addressed. It’s also not something this one individual woman and her body need to be under fire for.

Here’s more of what she said about the role:

Playing Wonder Woman is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can’t describe to you how much I wanted to play this character without even knowing I wanted to play her. I met a lot of people from the industry in LA for meetings. They always asked me ‘what’s your dream role?’, and I never could define it… I don’t want to play a damsel in distress that needs to be saved. I don’t like it when women in the movies are shown as the victims. I always thought that if I could send out a message, I want to show the strong side of a woman and how she can handle tough situations.

I get to play the strongest most empowering woman ever – Wonder Woman. I’m so grateful and I thank God every day. I want to devour it and enjoy every bite.

The fact that Gal Gadot is a slim lady seems to be…well, besides the point, in this case. I am much more interested in how they treat her character onscreen. I am much more interested in her performance and what she does to make Diana her own. I’m even interested in her costuming and her makeup, but I’m not nearly as interested in the body that will inhabit those things. We’ll get our first glimpse with Batman v Superman of if Gadot can master Wonder Woman, and that’s what I am waiting to see. And I have a feeling what makes or breaks it won’t be her measurements.

What do you think of her comments?
