Twin Peaks Newbie Recap: “The Path to the Black Lodge”

This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

A solo outing this week as I realized the next two (and final) episodes were a two-parter and I didn’t want to be that mean to myself.

Episode 27: “The Path to the Black Lodge”

Damn, Ted Raimi is good at playing dead. His bandmate is answering questions from the police. It’s not too complicated, they were going to move to LA, this stranger caught up with them and offered beer. His pal starts crying so of course Andy cries too. At the station, Lucy wants to know what Andy wants to know about saving their planet. She’s going to enter Miss Twin Peaks to get money for the baby, whose father she should know for a fact soon.

BILLY ZANE is back and asking about Audrey. Dr. Hayward is checking out Benjamin, who says he’s only interested in doing the right thing. Hayward tells him to stay away from Eileen but he insists he can’t. We find out the reason BILLY ZANE is leaving — his friend has been murdered! Donna does some digging in her attic and finds the father’s name on her birth certificate empty. Also, some amazing family photos…

tpep27_044She gets an urgent call from Hawk who is also at the hotel reading a book about owls when he finds Audrey and asks her to come back to the station. Major Briggs is at the station looking for symbols with some help, specifically the Blue Book files regarding Windom. He goes on to tell them Windom became secretive and possessive of his Twin Peaks assignments. There’s an old video of him talking about sorcerers, evil, and the Black Lodge. Agent Cooper says it was not really about revenge but the Lodge which must have brought him back to Twin Peaks. I’m gonna say it was both. Briggs decides to clear his head in the woods. Oh dear, the bonsai tree is still in the room. We cut to Windom, who is going off on his usual rants, as Leo steals the shock button.

At the R&R a random diner’s hand starts shaking as she’s eating pie. Shelly and Bobby are practicing her speech. He’s been thinking about their relationship. She misses  him. Blah blah blah, they’re back together? Ugh. Agent Cooper calls for her to meet at the station too.

Mayor Dwayne tells Teen Witch it’s in the bag as far as the Miss Twin Peaks contest is concerned. But he tells her to dress hot just in case. She’s apparently holding off on their marriage until she wins. Agent Cooper discusses the note Shelly, Donna, and Audrey received and asks if they met any strangers recently. Why, yes, they did! He asks them to check in with the sheriff’s office twice a day. Leo recognizes Shelly on Windom’s deadly playing cards and gets angry. He pulls the button on Windom not realizing it only works on his collar. He proceeds to shock himself over and over

BILLY ZANE just misses Audrey again at the hotel. She goes to see Benjamin who wants her to be the spokesperson of the Ghostwood fight. She just wants to know where BILLY ZANE is. Geez! He gives her the note and she rushes off to find him, grabbing Peter to drive her.

TwinPeaksS1Ep27fAgent Cooper is thinking about Annie longingly while poor Sheriff Harry listens and is SUPER sad. Cooper’s hand shakes just like the woman from the diner! Briggs is in the woods, when a two person horse costume comes up and shoots him with a dart. Poison?? It’s Windom/Leo inside the costume of course.

Agent Cooper talks with Annie about the investigation and their romance. There’s a really long, slow zoom out and then they kiss and plates crash and we focus on the food dripping from the plates. I must be missing some symbolism here.

Audrey makes it to the airport just in time to catch BILLY ZANE. They exchange I love yous, and then she blurts out:

TwinPeaksS1Ep27b

DoubleTakeThen: “I want you to make love with me.”

NeilTysonAnd who is BILLY ZANE to argue? I guess Peter will just wait outside til they’re done? Yup, that’s exactly what he does. Though we do see his hand shakes too! WHAT IS GOING ON?!

Windom has Briggs up on a giant target, using real arrows now. Since he won’t answer, Windom gives him drugs. He doesn’t say much but he saw the symbols in dreams and something about Jupiter and Saturn meeting. Meanwhile, Catherine is still trying to figure out the box. Andrew thinks a rolling pin should work but first he punches in the day it arrived and it… opens to another box which he then smashes open with the pin. Some sort of metal is inside? Is this adamantium?

At the hotel, Agent Cooper wants to dance with Annie and they start talking lovey-dovey again but the Mayor gets on the microphone and brings everything to a screeching halt. Annie says she’ll enter Miss Twin Peaks contest after all and… Lurch things that’s a really, really, really, really, really, really terrible idea.

NO, NO, NO!

NO, NO, NO!

Peter wakes up in his car, BILLY ZANE having taken off, Audrey de-virginized. Peter says he’ll take her fishing if she really wants to get cheered up. Leo is not in great shape as Windom continues his research on the symbols and says the time draws nearer. He figures out that the cave painting is a map to the Black Lodge!

OH SHIT BOB IS REACHING THROUGH A HOLE IN THE SPACE TIME CONTINUUM.

TwinPeaksS1Ep27hIn an odd sort of pit we see… red curtains.
