Agent Carter showrunners Tara Butters, Michele Fazekas, and Chris Dingess have leaked a handful of clues about upcoming plot developments in the show’s second season. The interview at Comic Book Resources gives very little away, but I intend to speculate wildly regardless.
Much of the interview revolves around a potential romance plot-line for Peggy. Tara Butters had this to say about writing a character who could follow on the heels of an unforgettable former flame like Captain America:
Let’s make him different. Let’s make somebody she dates different than Steve. It’s not that she’s going to fall for the same guy all the time. So it’s fun to sort of think about who would that be.
Given the use of male pronouns to describe Peggy’s hypothetical love interests throughout the interview, I doubt fans of the Angie/Peggy pairing will receive a Legend of Korra-esque dramatic reveal in this season. One can only hope. Okay, I’m hoping.
Given that Peggy will be moving to LA this season, it’s not even clear whether she’ll even see Angie again, nor any of her other friends and foes from NYC. Butters says she “can’t confirm” whether Angie or Dottie will make an appearance, but does say “familiar faces” may well appear.
The only other character mentioned by name in the interview is Agent Thompson; personally, I’d rather see Peggy date a block of cheese than that guy, but your mileage may vary.
The piece of the interview that thrilled me most? Butters’ description of the show’s new influences:
Part of what we’re looking at as touchstones like “L.A. Confidential” or “Chinatown.” What I love about those stories is you start with one little crime that doesn’t seem to be anything. And then as soon as you start to dig into it, you find this whole web of conspiracy. It just lends itself so great to ten episodes, and you really kind of get into some interesting places.
Given that Peggy Carter has already been stealing the fedora back from MRAs everywhere, it will be great to see her story lean even further into the noir aesthetic — this time with a skirt suit rather than a duster. I love the idea of Sleuth Carter, and although I’m not sure I care so much about the boyfriend plot, I am psyched to see her unravel a conspiracy while slinking through low-lit streetlights and dusky alleyways. Bring on the noir glamour, Agent Carter!
