Screenwriter Drew Pearce may have jumped the gun yesterday when he confirmed the rumors of a second Ghostbusters reboot and expressed hopes that Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt would join the project. Today, Ivan Reitman—the producer of Paul Feig’s upcoming, totally-real Ghostbusters reboot as well as the original—quashed Pearce’s confirmation, stating that there is only one Ghostbusters reboot in the works right now:
There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise.
This directly contradicts Reitman’s previous statements from last March regarding other Ghostbusters films:
… There will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.
Hmmm. I bet Drew Pearce got a very stern talking-to! I’m also guessing that Reitman doesn’t want to divert potential publicity for his current project, and he knows that talking about Dudebusters now will only encourage snarky people like me to position it against Feig’s project by calling it “Dudebusters” over and over. What do you think?
