Writer/Director Christopher McQuarrie has a lot on his plate right now, what with the release of Tom Cruise vehicle Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, which McQuarrie directed. However, it’s another McQuarrie-written/Cruise-starring film that currently has him chatty. That would be a possible sequel to last year’s Edge of Tomorrow.

As reported by Nerdist, Cruise has approached McQuarrie with a potential idea for a sequel, and at first, McQuarrie wasn’t interested. However, something he learned while directing Rogue Nation allowed him to rethink the possibilities:

What I’ve learned, having made Mission, is what I would write into the movie to make [it] an easier sell. Edge of Tomorrow was incredibly difficult to market. From the look of the film to the title of the film … The movie didn’t have the moments that a trailer needs to tell you, ‘This is the experience you’re going to have.’

So, on Rogue Nation, I went to marketing right away and said, ‘Tell me what you need. Tell me how to make a Mission: Impossible and show me what goes into it and educate me. Teach me marketing so I can give you guys the material that you need.’ And that is what you saw in the marketing campaign.

I loved Edge of Tomorrow, and think it one of the most underrated sci-fi films in recent years, so I’m thrilled by even the tiniest prospect of a sequel. It’s also interesting that McQuarrie recognizes how underserved it was in its marketing, despite starring Tom Cruise, and that his plan as a writer would be to make sure that key marketing elements are included in the script – in addition to, you know, telling a great story, which Edge of Tomorrow already was.

What do you think? Would you be psyched for more Edge of Tomorrow?
