Online Petition to Have Jon Stewart Moderate a Presidential Debate Garners 150,000 Signatures

Jon Stewart’s retirement is certainly looking busy. He’s hosting WWE SummerSlam—much to our delight—and now an online petition to have him moderate a presidential debate is picking up steam.

Oh YES.

Now I hope Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination for two reasons! (The first being my certainty that he couldn’t beat a literal sack of garbage in the general election, thus ensuring GOP defeat.)

Of course, it’s just a change.org petition, but it’s rapidly nearing its 200,000 signature goal at a current 150,000, and someone with the power to make it happen is sure to take notice. Besides, it’s not as though this idea is new—it could very well already be an idea going around, and it’s one we’d love to see become reality. The petition reads:

Over the last 16 years, Jon Stewart has played an influential and iconic role in covering US politics and media. We believe he should continue that tradition as a moderator at one of the 2016 Presidential Debates.

Jon Stewart is more than qualified to tackle the moderating job. Mr. Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States Cabinet, 32 members of the United States Senate, 7 members of the United States House of Representatives, and scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news.

I know this petition can make a difference — in 2012, three concerned high school students started a petition on Change.org asking the Commission on Presidential Debates to select a female moderator for a presidential debate. It garnered over 180,000 signatures, and won!

So c’mon, Internet! If you can bring down the FCC for John Oliver, surely you can sign a petition for Jon Stewart— nay, for the fate of our nation!

Of course, if Stewart does wind up moderating a debate, he’ll face easy criticism for having a well-known liberal bias. But that’s tough to get around for any moderator, as his own colleague Stephen Colbert so aptly put it:
