OK, there’s no way that video is accurate, even if you leave out the Pokéballs appearing in people’s hands, but tracking, catching, and battling Pokémon in the real world with your Pokédex—er, smartphone is pretty much the dream.
So we’re pretty excited to see how close to the reality Pokémon GO is going to get us. It’ll probably look a lot more like the screen images presented at the end of the video:
But even still, the game is part of a partnership between Niantic Labs—who have made a GPS-based game before with the MMO AR game Ingress—and The Pokémon Company, so there’s sure to be a functional, GPS-based Pokémon hunting system in place, which sounds like a lot of fun on its own. Then there’s the hint of a public battle system …
There’s also the Pokémon GO Plus, a wearable shaped like a Pokéball/compass hybrid that will alert you when something is going on nearby in the game.
And you will inevitably be at its beck and call, so be prepared to frequently show up to work, return from your lunch break, or really arrive anywere Peter Parker-style from the game’s (currently tbd) 2016 release date on:
