Following close on the heels of yesterday’s news that Ludi Lin will play the Black Ranger in the upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot, today we’ve learned that RJ Cyler will play the Blue Ranger. It’s cool to see the Power Rangers casting directors overturning the initial concerns from fans that the cast wouldn’t be as diverse as the actors on the original American iteration of the series. It could be better, sure — but at least now we know it won’t be worse?

Interestingly, none of these casting announcements have included the characters’ names — only their Ranger designations. The film’s first casting call did make reference to the original characters’ names from the first episodes of the American Power Rangers show, but the lack of reference to the names in current press (and even on the film’s current IMDB page) seems to me like a hint that these Rangers may not match up with their former counterparts in the way we expect. Or … it could mean nothing! But, hey, who knows.

Anyway, the Yellow Ranger is the only Ranger left to be announced. So far, it seems like the Power Rangers film has mostly been casting unknown actors … and if my speculation is correct, then now we can’t even say for sure that the Yellow Ranger will be named “Trini.” Anyway, don’t let that stop any of you from guessing your favorite teen gals who deserve a shot at the role!
