Responses to Jared Leto’s tattooed, sweatpants-wearing version of the Joker for Suicide Squad have varied widely; you might be able to better decide whether you love it or hate it based on Empire‘s upcoming cover, which features a head-to-toe shot of Leto in costume. Leto’s Joker is barefoot, carries a cane, and has a lot of ink adorning his torso, including a picture of a grin — seems fair, since Leto himself isn’t grinning in the photo. No need, since his tummy can do that for him.
We’ve shared our own mixed feelings about Leto’s Joker in detail, but we’ve still got a long way to wait before this movie comes out. Until then, here’s another colorful quote from Leto via IndieWire:
I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. It was fun playing those psychological games. But at the same time, it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick-hole … It’s something different. If you don’t break rules, you’re not going to strike new ground.
Although Leto’s Joker purportedly takes inspiration from The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke, he doesn’t seem too recognizable to me, based on the photos we’ve seen so far. This second picture from Empire’s upcoming spread, featuring a straightjacket-clad Joker talking to Dr. Harleen Quinzel, does look more like something we’ve seen before … for better or for worse. The rest of the promotional images, however, look like a brand new Joker.
What do you think about the Joker’s new aesthetic? Too juggalo, or just juggalo enough?
