National Geographic recently announced that they’d be laying off about 9% of their workforce, which includes many award-winning photojournalists and editors. This announcement comes not even two months into their partnership with 21st Century Fox.
Among those laid off are photo editors Sherry L. Brubaker, Kim Hubbard, and Nancy Lee Ott. Veteran photographer Michael “Nick” Nichols is also gone. Much of the creative and editorial staff are the ones getting the axe, which stands at odds with National Geographic Society CEO Greg Knell’s statement that “there won’t be an [editorial] turn in a direction that is different form the National Geographic heritage.”
Back during the announcement of the partnership, James Murdoch, co-founder and executive co-chairman of 21st Century Fox, said that they hadn’t had any plans to change the magazine.
Do we have any NatGeo fans in the crowd? Any thoughts on this development?
