Sure, The Force Awakens isn’t even out yet, so it’s hard to know how excited we should be about any future Disney-backed Star Wars projects. (Who are we kidding? We’ll get excited every time, and they know it.) Still, we can’t help but look forward to the “spinoff” anthology films and wonder what they’ll be like, and it sounds like they’ll bring something different to a galaxy far, far away.
Speaking to /Film, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that, while the upcoming Rogue One takes place between the original trilogy and the prequels and there’s a Han Solo backstory movie planned, the anthology films won’t all be prequels:
No, no. It just so happens to be Rogue One is the precursor to New Hope and yes, this Han Solo idea but I would not argue that we are setting up any kind of prequel notion with these standalone movies. I think that’s so far just coincidence. And to be perfectly honest, we have changed the order of those at the last minute, so that’s not the intention at all.
So what will they be like? Well, Rogue One centers around the rebel efforts to steal the Death Star plans before the Empire can use them to blow up a planet (sadly, they were a bit slow on that one). When asked if that would be Star Wars‘ heist movie in the way that Marvel’s movies take on different genres, Kennedy responded, “It is to a certain extent.” She continued,
It is definitely in the genre thinking but Star Wars is very different than Marvel in that they basically build their stories around characters, and then they seed those characters in different stories. Star Wars, you know, is a place, it’s a universe, so those stories are constructed a little differently than Marvel.
But at the end of the day, it still sounds like the anthology movies will have the freedom to explore different genres instead of having the same feel as the main trilogy. With a “heist” movie in the works and a Boba Fett story on the horizon that’s said to be a space western, we’re excited to see something a little different from Star Wars movies.
