With the introduction of Bryan Fuller as the showrunner for CBS’ Star Trek television show, chances are quite high that he could be bringing Angela Bassett on as the newest captain of Starfleet. In addition to Bassett, he once named another incredible fan favorite that he wanted to play First Officer opposite Bassett.
According to an interview between Fuller and Den of Geek in 2013, he described his dream Star Trek crew, with Bassett featuring very prominently as captain. He said:
I want Angela Bassett to be the captain, that’s who I would love to have, you know Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson. I would love to do that version of the show but that’s in the future to be told.
Oh, man. Can you imagine the adventures those two would get into? I must admit: I’m not a massive Trek fan, but I do very much enjoy the series. But if you told me that Bassett and Dawson would end up being the Picard and Riker/Kirk and Spock of a brand new generation of Trek adventures? I am here for that.
Fuller’s no stranger to the Trek universe. He’s worked on Voyager and written a few episodes for Deep Space Nine, two shows that are some real fan favorites. He absolutely cares about Star Trek, so his addition and the way he talks about things is certainly a welcome breath of fresh air.
To support Bassett, a Twitter hashtag campaign has sprung up: #CaptainAngelaBassett.

No cast announcements have been made as of yet, but you can be damn sure that this is something we’re all really hoping happens.
