On the heels of Jessica Chastain starting an all-female production company, Freckle Films, it was announced today that she is also on the illustrious advisory board of a new non-profit production company called We Do It Together, which focuses on female empowerment in the film and television industries.
The board also includes fellow heavy-hitters like Queen Latifah, Juliette Binoche, Freida Pinto, Catherine Hardwicke, Amma Asante, MaÅ‚gorzata Szumowska, Marielle Heller, Ziyi Zhang, Haifaa Al Mansour, and Katia Lund. We Do It Together hopes to partner with male and female industry professionals to create a slate of “gender-led” projects, creating opportunities for women and other marginalized voices. What makes this venture intriguing is the fact that a film production company is going to be using a non-profit model.
The Hollywood Reporter explains:
The organization, which will raise capital from grants, governments, corporate sponsors, and individual donations, plans to announce its first project in Cannes in May. We Do It Together also will participate at the United Nations’ 3rd Annual Power of Collaboration Global Summit on February 29 where board member and founder Chiara Tilesi will be presenting the new international non–profit production company model and discussing the organizations mission of challenging the status quo and producing movies by women and about women, while changing deep-seated perceptions about female stereotypes.
Sounds like an exciting venture! It’s awesome to see so many things coming out of the woodwork to close the gender gap in this enormous and influential industry.
