Apparently, Lionsgate had hoped to turn it into a franchise? Oops.

Today, in news that probably surprises no one, the whitewashed Gods of Egypt (a.k.a. “the movie about Egypt with no actual Egyptians in it,” as I heard someone say behind me in the theater when the trailer popped up before Deadpool) is not making a lot of money.

The film, which reportedly cost $140 million to make, debuted with only $14 million domestically across 3,117 theaters. Internationally, it grossed about $24 million.

And the reviews really aren’t that great either, prompting the film’s director Alex Proyas to take to Facebook for an insult-laced rant, calling film critics “deranged idiots” who base their reviews on “the status quo” instead of formulating their own opinions and claiming that he has never gotten good reviews on any movie he’s directed.

Sounds like someone is feeling especially bitter about their movie not being well-received–but to counter one thing Proyas says in his post, calling out a film for whitewashing has nothing to do with being “politically correct”. It’s just plain correct. Guess the truth hurts.
